about Tommes K. Brandt
the story behind the music
For Tommes, music has been a constant for as long as he can remember. Growing up in a rural region of former East Germany, opportunities to experience different musical scenes and club concepts were limited. While music was always present, the local nightlife rarely offered the variety and creative freedom he was looking for.
His musical journey began early. Encouraged to pursue singing as a child, Tommes attended music school, sang in a choir and later spent several years as the lead vocalist of a band. But his relationship with music was never limited to performing. He also loved discovering, selecting and sharing music with others.
Hosting parties was another passion from an early age. Tommes enjoyed bringing people together, inviting friends over, preparing playlists and burning CDs for countless gatherings. Music was always at the centre of these occasions, whether it meant introducing someone to a new track, exchanging musical discoveries or simply spending an entire evening listening together. Looking back, curating music and creating spaces for people to connect had already become a natural part of his life, long before he stepped behind the decks.
In 2011, Tommes moved to Berlin, where the city's nightlife, creative communities and electronic music scene opened up new perspectives. Through years of exploring club culture, connecting with artists and collaborating with DJs and producers, his musical interests continued to evolve. His Mozambican roots, his experiences growing up in Germany and his life in Berlin all contribute to the personal and cultural perspective he brings to his artistic work.
The desire to DJ had always been there, but pursuing it seriously required more than enthusiasm. For Tommes, it also meant having the right equipment, the time and the freedom to develop his skills independently. Rather than occasionally renting studio space, he had always imagined building his own setup at home — a place where he could explore music, practise and experiment whenever inspiration struck.
For a long time, other commitments made that difficult to realise. Eventually, with the resources and flexibility to invest in his own equipment and creative space, he decided to take that step. What followed was not the discovery of a new passion, but the continuation of something that had accompanied him for most of his life.
Today, House forms the foundation of his musical identity, with influences from Tech House, Disco and Baile Funk. His appreciation for vocals, shaped by his years as a singer, remains part of his musical approach. Equally important are the history and cultural roots of club music and the communities that continue to shape it.
Beyond his individual work, Tommes is co-founder and co-host of A-Side Berlin, a House-rooted collective and party series founded alongside two fellow DJs. Born from a shared desire for more welcoming and inclusive dancefloors, A-Side brings together BIPoC, queer communities and allies while celebrating the cultural legacy of underground club music.
The first edition took place on April 17, 2026, at RAW-Gelände Berlin.
For Tommes, music has never been just about performing. It has always been about discovering, sharing and bringing people together. From hosting parties at home to creating experiences behind the decks, that connection has remained at the heart of everything he does.
